REFLECTION

My starting point for this piece was finding a common theme throughout my work which I may want to use as a basis for unit 7. I found I enjoy using everyday objects, raw materials and juxtapositions or things that look out of place.

My initial idea was to make an arrangement like Abraham Cruswillegas' 'Horizontes' however instead of using objects, using all the left over materials I have from previous projects (such as plastic bags, shredded paper, flour, white mops, foil etc). I developed this idea further. I thought that in order for the primary focus to be on material, the piece should be monochrome. I was inspired to do this after a reference in Sculpture Now spoke of a painter who narrowed down his palette to only white in order to bring in other elements of what makes a painting (framing, texture etc). I would also like the piece to be temporary as the shape (a circle) would be inspired by a mandala, which also focus on the meditative process of making. To mirror this conceptually, I would document the making process using video, as I enjoy the integration of process and final product. The problem I encountered for this piece was the possible need for a risk assessment because of the flour. I realised the dust may be a risk to someone in the building who had asthma and as such in order to do this as part of these reading weeks I would either have to remove the flour or postpone. I decided to postpone the idea instead of doing it half heartedly so I could get advice from the tutors and avoid risk.

One problem I encountered in making work over this period was the narrowing down of what I wanted to focus on to develop. I was unsure of whether to focus on performance or public sculpture or everyday objects. I decided as i have already done work which had performative undertones and everyday objects, I could do with further exploring the idea of public sculpture to better prepare me for BA especially as one course has a Public Sculpture project annually. During this time I decided to prioritise my ability to explain verbally my references and analyse my portfolio pages, to try and improve my chances of getting into a BA, rather than getting a good grade by filling in days of reflecting on individual decisions.

This work extended my previous use of photoshopping to give an impression of intended scale, which was mainly influenced by Shauna Cribbin who Karen recommended I looked at during progress tutorials as I struggle to communicate my analysis on workflow.

I saw these cup lids when buying a coffee and loved the way they moved and made curved structures. I was also interested in the question of what can be art or not, hence I have placed them in prestigious or regal environments. To make this work more of a final piece I would like to use different objects and different environments and improve my photoshop skills as at the moment these are more development pieces rather than works in themselves. As I am someone who tends to be more 3D orientated it may be interesting or unit 7 to try and make this sort of idea.

REFLECTION

My conceptual starting point was questioning the idea of if it is necessary to have walls in order for something to be a room and if human interaction/ definition is what makes a room a room. I also wanted to challenge what can be seen as a room. This extended my previous exploration of abstraction via reduction.

One problem I encountered was working out a media to best demonstrate this idea. Originally I had thought it best to create an audio piece however I found it was hard to feel enclosed by something which lacks physical existence. I also found this was something the autonomous sculptural object I presented for the final crit lacked. As a performative piece this allows the encounterer to feel enclosed with some element of privacy. The perception of the studio in which the piece is placed is also altered by the blurriness created by the material which helped me illustrate the contrast between the two 'rooms' - one made with traditional walls another with plastic.

The main influences for this piece were Karla Black, Franz West and Robert Morris. I was inspired by the fragility of Black's work and was interested by a description of her work (see Research) I found which said they were not to be interacted with. I applied West's idea of performance and each viewer making the work their own as I did not leave instructions of how the piece should be interacted with. The way that Morris' felt pieces are different depending on the site was something I enjoyed and was paralleled in my piece as it would not be the same in any other space. This also helped me project the conceptual idea of human interaction making/changing a room, as after each person interacts with it the piece changes.

An alternative way I could present this piece may be a video, having a video of different people interacting with the piece and changing the piece as it becomes dirtier and folds change.

REFLECTION

This piece extended my previous idea of collecting my sketchbook off cuts. The original starting point was based off looking at the remains and traces of things and the idea of presenting waste. I was inspired by Song Dong's 'Waste Not'
